Local Coffee: Greengo from Gakenke (Rwanda)

With its lakes and mountains, and an altitude of over 1,600 meters, Rwanda's Northern Province is a land ripe for coffee growing. Several thousand producers each own a plot of land, and numerous washing stations have been established.

The Dukunde Kawa cooperative is located in the town of Musasa, in the heart of Rwanda. It was created in 2003 by two producers' associations and now has nearly 2,000 members, 80% of whom are women. Certified Fair Trade, the cooperative has three washing stations. At each station, managers help producers improve the quality of their coffees by socially involving them in the cooperative's operations and paying them a little more each year, which allows them to invest in their production tools and improve quality and consistency. This model, although quite rare, quickly bore fruit by significantly improving the living conditions of women in rural areas: it is an example to follow in the Rwandan countryside.

The region, with its savannah climate, dry winters, higher rainfall in summer than in winter, and an average annual temperature slightly above 21°, is also home to a growing gorilla population.
